Matchweek X of the Freedom QJ League W nearly delivered a major upset in the girls' tournament – Kairat came close to dropping a victory for the first time.
Let us remind you that Oksana Kokhannaia’s team is confidently leading the league table, with every match so far ending in a dominant victory for the yellow-blacks – but this week, they were in for a surprise.
The Almaty players were hosted by Irtysh. In the 24th minute, a precise strike from Angelina Klenova put the visitors ahead, but they struggled to build on that advantage.
An uncharacteristic scenario for Kairat took an unexpected turn when Elizaveta Medvedeva scored a stunning goal from outside the box against Aknur Zhaksykeldi. Remarkably, Irtysh’s top scorer received the ball directly from her goalkeeper – Stella Baburchina-Luklyanets.
However, the miracle wasn’t meant to be – in the 83rd minute, Baburchina-Luklyanets went down while coming off her line. Before it became clear how serious the situation was, Milena Nikolenko seized the opportunity, putting the visitors ahead 2-1.
It turned out that Stella had sustained an injury. In her place, defender Amina Nechtailyuk had to put on the goalkeeper gloves – and she managed the unfamiliar role well during stoppage time. However, the hosts couldn’t recover the deficit, and the yellow-blacks once again left the pitch as winners.
Both of Kairat’s goals were assisted by Sofia Yagudina – she now has 10 goals and 10 assists in just nine matches. Elizaveta Medvedeva’s goal was also a milestone: the Irtysh forward has now recorded 10 goals and 5 assists in 10 games.
The matchweek continues – the standings will become clearer by Friday.
