Zhas Kyran is one of only two teams in the main tournament of the Freedom QJ League that haven’t lost a single match this season. While Kairat has yet to face serious resistance, their neighbors in the southern capital have had several close calls.
Let’s revisit three matches where Sergey Kirov’s team came dangerously close to defeat – but managed to avoid it.
Matchweek 3 – away, vs Ordabasy
The Almaty side quickly built a comfortable lead – goals from Nurislam Kairatuly and Bekzhan Khafizov made it 2:0 by the 49th minute in Shymkent.
But the hosts didn’t give up. Abdurakhman Orumbaev pulled one back in the 68th minute, and in the 83rd, Zhanali Yesenaliev converted a penalty – 2:2.
Ordabasy had 13 total shots with six on target, compared to 11/5 from the visitors. More importantly, their expected goals (xG) were much higher – 2.25 vs 0.71 – showing that Zhas Kyran had a tough time holding on.
Matchweek 5 – home, vs Atyrau
This time, the roles were reversed – it was Zhas Kyran chasing the score. Atyrau went 2:0 up before the break, with goals by Bakdaulet Marat and Maksat Muratov (penalty).
Despite the scoreline, the hosts dominated offensively – 20 shots (8 on target) compared to just 8 total shots (2 on target) from the Oilers.
The comeback started in the 58th minute with a goal from Abulmansur Kasymtai, and in the dying minutes, Mansur Kartamysov capitalized on a defensive error to level the score.
Matchweek 8 – away, vs Kairat
Many believed the impressive unbeaten run would finally end in the derby against Kairat.
And by the look of the match, it almost did. The home side had 23 shots, six of which were on target – exactly the total number of shots attempted by Zhas Kyran (with three on target).
By the 68th minute, they were down 0:2. Then 17-year-old Nurislam Kairatuly reignited hope with a goal, and just before full-time, he assisted Ramzan Mussayev to make it 2:2.
In fact, their unbeaten streak isn’t just 10 matches – it stretches to 13, considering that this same squad played last year in the U-17 tournament.
Their next test? A clash with Astana. Will they pass it? We’ll find out this weekend.
