Young Shakhter midfielder Gleb Makridov, who won the Changan MVP of the Season award following last season in the Freedom QJ League, continues his training camp at Atlético Madrid.
This is part of the League’s international player development program, implemented jointly with Changan Kazakhstan, the official distributor of the Changan brand in Kazakhstan and part of Astana Motors.
Gleb shared his impressions of the trip to Spain, his adaptation within the academy, and the training process at a top European club.
On the Changan MVP award and expectations before the trip
– I love football, I enjoy this game. I got emotions from every training session, from wins and goals. That’s how I earned the Changan MVP of the Season award and came here.
It was my first experience like this, so I was very curious how everything would go. Many people asked me about the timing, duration, and which team I would train with.
First impressions
– Training at Atlético is, first of all, a chance to gain international experience. To see how people train, play, and develop in Spain.
Atlético is a top European club, constantly competing in the Champions League. There are many legends here, like Antoine Griezmann. His playing style is somewhat similar to mine.
When I arrived, I felt incredible эмоции. Everything is very professional and structured. I also faced a language barrier, which showed me how important it is to learn languages.
We visited the stadium, dressing rooms, pitch, and museum. The museum is very interesting, with trophies, retro kits, and unique items.
The stadium is huge but feels very cozy inside.
On training and team atmosphere
– The training process is similar to ours. We gather an hour before training, greet each other, and start with gym work.
On the first day, I trained with the U-19 team. I didn’t notice a huge difference, but they play very quickly, often one-touch.
Later, I joined Atlético Madrid C. The players there are older, very technical, and confident.
At first, it was difficult to understand everything, but over time you adapt.
The coaches and teammates are very supportive. If you don’t understand something, they explain again. I met players from Russia and Ukraine who helped me adapt.
If you stay here for about a month, you get fully used to it.
On self-improvement
– At every training session, I want to show my maximum and prove that I can compete at this level.
Fitness coach Evgeny Goryachy called me and advised me to give my all.
Talent alone is not enough – you need hard work. Without effort, even talented players rarely succeed.
On the importance of the League
– Freedom QJ League is a big help for young players. Before, we played several matches in a short period, which was tough.
Now we have a weekly cycle, allowing proper preparation for each opponent.
I know many people in Kazakhstan support me. It really helps – you feel you’re not alone. I’m grateful for all the support.
Last season, Makridov scored 19 goals in 19 matches and provided 10 assists. He also set league records for minutes played (4,502) and goal contributions (39).
During the offseason, he trained with the senior team and scored twice in friendly matches.
